Well get ready to believe it! And also see it! I mean, the seeing part first, and then as a result, the believing part.

( And, ten minutes later, along comes a Very Defiant Jack, searching the gardens furiously until he sets eyes on Lucifer.

And points!! Emphatically!! )

You! Give me back my worm!

[Rude that means Jack did, eventually, with a lot of work, get the last word in for that round, anyway.

Lucifer is folded up in the middle of quite a lot of destroyed plants from the storms and extracting the damaged, unsalvageable parts while trying to right the rest that might be able to recover.]

I think the cat ran off with it.

( At some point he's going to think about how weird it is that Lucifer of all people is Thorne's resident gardener. That he's good with plants.

While that may be the case, he absolutely refuses to believe his person is good with living creatures. )

What cat?! There is no reality where you can convince me there's a cat. Give it back. Worms are for friends- or, at the very least, reluctant allies. Not--

[Truly it is the funniest joke that Lucifer has leaned into. It has been... well, perhaps a good year now that he's worked at learning these plants.

And he's grown to like the work. Here, and what he tended in the Nether of the future, and now his Horizon domain.

So it's a tragedy that the storm cut through.

He ignores Jack's spluttering and puts a hand to his check in mock-horror.] You do the Duchess a disservice.

Who? ( He starts, but before Lucifer can even think to answer, he's already waving his hands around in the air like he's swatting away a bunch of annoying bees. ) No, never mind, it doesn't matter. Stop- trying to distract me, just fork it over!

( Grabby hands!! )

Have you considered saying please? [He extracts another broken stalk and does not throw it at Jack, you're welcome.]

( His answer is flat and completely deadpan. He considered it, and then made the executive decision not to.

Just behind Jack's left shoulder, a tiny little bandit face pokes out from beneath his shirt collar. Rita makes direct eye contact with Lucifer. Jack doesn't seem to notice. )

[Lucifer will in fact address the raccoon, ignoring Jack other than pointing at him.] Don't look at me, he's the one lacking basic manners.

( Rita blinks. If Lucifer spoke raccoon, he might interpret it as nice garden you got here, sure would be a shame if some feral creature were to pee everywhere. Or maybe it was just a blink. Who's to say? She doesn't get much of a chance to clarify; Jack snaps his fingers. )

Hey! Don't talk to her! Give me my stupid worm!

No. [Hey technically he never said he'd give it back.]

( This seriously fucking figures. )

Okay, listen. Let me just lay it out for you: give me the worm back, or I'm going to make things really, really annoying. I have a lot of free time now.

How do you have free time? I thought you were supposed to be training. [Like a magic trick, he produces the worm, expertly woven between his fingers. It's less about Worm Skill and more that he plays a lot of string games.

He tuts.] All I want is a 'please', that's really not so difficult.

( The answer to that question is outside of training my girlfriend is gone and I barely sleep, but that sounds sad even in his own head.

But fine. If that's all it's going to take? He's dying on worm hill, he doesn't have to die on manners hill too.

He holds out a hand, and firmly says: )

[Without expression or commentary, Lucifer relinquishes the worm, and then silently returns to fixing the garden.]

( Proving that his manners absolutely exist, he offers a very clipped, very terse: )

( And hugs the worm to his chest as he turns to leave. Rita's head, like a swiveling parascope, stays pointed firmly at Lucifer in a weird, preternatural gaze from the back of his shirt the entire time. )
